Provide candidates the skills to establish and operate a departmental firearms and rifle program
Full Description
This 80-hour course will give instructor candidates the skills to establish and operate a comprehensive departmental firearms program, and successful graduates will receive both ILEA Firearms and Rifle Instructor endorsements.  Topics to be covered will include:
• Weapon safety
• Weapon manipulation, nomenclature and maintenance
• Principles of marksmanship and methods to teach them on all platforms
• Use of optics
• Diagnosis and correction of shooter-induced problems
• Coaching techniques
• Pistol, shotgun, and rifle ballistics
• Developing in-service training
• Range management
• Program development and documentation
• Managing range emergencies
• Student presentations for instructor development

Course enrollment is limited, and is only open to certified Iowa Law Enforcement Officers.  Instructor candidates will be required to fire a qualifying score of 90% on the Firearms Instructor Pistol Qualification Course and the Rifle Qualification Course for admission.  Visit https://ilea.iowa.gov, click “For Agencies” and then “Firearms Courses of Fire” to find the current required courses and target information.

Iron sights, red dot sights, magnifiers, low-powered variable optics, and riflescopes are allowed; however, the use of magnification higher than 6x during any qualification course of fire is not allowed.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to eligibility verification requirements, this course operates on a waitlist.  Signing up for this course does NOT guarantee you a spot; you will receive an email if your registration is approved. As per Iowa Administrative Code 501, all ILEA Instructor candidates must have a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a certified officer before attending an instructor course. If you do not meet these minimum requirements, your registration will not be approved.

Equipment Needed:
• Weather-appropriate clothing and a brimmed hat
• Body armor
• Duty pistol, rifle with adjustable tactical sling, and shotgun; weapon-mounted lights and rifle suppressors preferred
• Duty belt with holster and duty flashlight
• 4 handgun magazines (minimum) and 3 rifle magazines (minimum)
• 1,500 rounds of BOTH handgun ammunition and rifle ammunition
• 50 birdshot, 20 buckshot, and 40 slugs
• XL dark-colored plain shirt that will be ruined
• Note-taking material (both a notebook and a laptop are preferred)
• Binoculars or spotting scope
• Cleaning equipment for all weapons
